These laws were passed in 2010 and apply to every rental and home sale. Even if you are not a landlord or selling a home I highly recommend installing these life saving devices in these locations. I have often heard it is best to change the batteries every 6 months and get a new device every 10 years to be sure they are functioning properly. Many fire departments have suggested changing the batteries twice a year during daylight savings to remind people, when you are changing your clocks, it’s also a good time to change your batteries.
